Are American Pastors Still Asleep in the Light?

“The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children.”

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

My experiences in the massive apostate church movement in America are well documented here on A Crooked Path. From churches where not a single person carried a Bible, and the pastor at that “Christian church” did not either, nor did he speak, or read, one word in his worldly illustrative joke telling, story telling”pep talk” passing for a Christian church service from God’s Word. To more out and out blatant worldly churches proclaiming they are “Christian” yet not one thing about them bespoke of knowing Scripture, knowing what being transformed and living as a disciple of Jesus Christ was or is about. More of these places than I care to recall, or think on, how displeased the Lord is with these places professing to be centers where His Word is taught truthfully, completely, yet nothing could be further from the truth.

Since those myriad misadventures in the polluted, corrupted, degraded and eroded landscape of what passes for Christianity and Christian churches and Christian Bible-based pastors my wife and I have been greatly blessed in being brought to a church in Christ, in the Word, in the Truth, in the Light, in the Way and preaching, teaching, serving God, Christ and the whole Scriptures.

There is massive, unholy, sickening deadly erosion in what passes for Christianity in America in these days.

It begins in the theology schools, the Bible colleges, the seminaries which now debate tearing apart and down the Word of God rather than fortifying, building up and teaching correctly the future shepherds of flocks in America. Places where from survey after survey, poll upon poll 6 out of every 10 people leaving these places where they are supposed to be instructed and fortified in the Word of God to go out and preach the Word, instead they do not believe the Word of God. They do not believe in the virgin birth, in Creation, in the great flood, in what occurred with Moses and the Israelites in Egypt, they do not believe Jesus was risen from the dead three days after being nailed to a cross and dying. Six out of ten coming out of these places professing to teach God’s Word and prepare pastors to shepherd flocks throughout America.

Instead endless debate ensues. The Word is dissected, torn down and denied. The world is exalted. The ways of the world determined the course to follow rather than God’s Word.

Appeasement. Allowing anything and everything. The erosion to the point presently practicing homosexuals are installed as pastors, transgender people are accepted in and told they are Christians even while still following their confused against God and nature transgender ways. Women are leading churches. Pastors are going out and blessing abortion clinics. Pastors are inviting Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Paganism into so-called Christian churches for supposed Christian services. More important now to be “tolerant” of everything, “inclusive” of everything, denying sin, denying hell than to know, stand boldly and firmly for and preach the whole inerrant Word of God.

I hear the term “cultural Christians” or “worldly Christians” in these last of the last days time of the Great Falling Away, of the people being given over to reprobate minds due to their worship and desire of the unrighteous over the known righteousness of God.

There is no such thing as a “cultural” or “worldly” or “part-time” partial Christian.

A person either is truly transformed within, born anew, becoming a new creature, renewed of mind and spirit thus desiring to walk in and with the Lord, to please the Lord, to shun the world and its ways, beliefs, patterns, and teachings not allowing themselves all things and they are TRUE Christians, TRUE disciples of Jesus Christ the Lord — or they are not. There is no middle ground. No gray areas. No choosing within God’s inerrant Word — “I’ll believe in that, that and maybe that, but never that, that, that and especially not in that!” and then thinking you’re a Christian. They, teaching all things are acceptable. one can follow and adopt the ways and beliefs of the world and still be Christian. That is a lie. That goes against the Word of God. Clearly. Plainly.

Unless a person becomes transformed; believing, obeying God and Jesus not partakers of things which lead a person astray, weaken and lead to apostasy, false teachings, and going from being nominal to nothing even close and eventually to the second death “Christians.” Woe to any of those! Thinking because they wear a precious metal or wooden facsimile of a cross around their necks and show up for a Sunday church service — no matter what is said in that service, or not said — they are then “Christians” and “going to heaven.” Of course, most of these very same believe EVERYONE is going to heaven and there is no hell, no sin, no accountability, no consequences. Never hearing about mortifying sin! Never bothering to eat the meat of the Word and drink of the Living Waters within the Word.

And where do all these lost sheep in all these lost flocks get their ideas which keep them weak, lost, worldly and not being truly of the body of those who genuinely have Jesus as their Head?

From the pastors standing on the pulpits, or in front of them telling them such things. These lost ones never seeking the Word themselves, never wanting it any other way because they imagine they can live in and be of the world, partakers of all it offers and are still saved. Not knowing what Jesus spoke in Matthew 7. Look it up for some homework and individual time in the Word of God if unfamiliar.

Pastors.

Most in our time are of the world. Apostate. Refusing the truth. Refusing to take on sin, what is transpiring in our world, in our nation and take a stand against all the sin and unrighteousness shepherding their flocks in the whole truth of God and God’s Word in these times.

Woe to all of them.

Woe to U.S. if we continue on this path and do not repent, if these pastors do not repent. Do not stand boldly. Boldly approach the throne of God. In complete faith. Shunning the world. Not seeking their own glory, fame, or being concerned with being liked. Appeasing and pleasing rather than true Bible-based teaching.

Let us pray daily for the lost, the worldly, the false to be found in the Light, no longer of the world, only teaching the Truth of the Word to their flocks.

There are many fine pastors in America. They are devoted shepherds. They are faithful teachers of the Word. They care for their flocks. And when necessary, they sound the alarm.

For each of them, I am thankful.

Some of them are dear friends and co-workers, and many of them have sacrificed much for God’s work and God’s people.

But there are all too many others who do not see the handwriting on the wall. They seem willfully ignorant of the “signs of the times.”

For them and, even more, for their congregations, I am deeply concerned.

According to a recent Barna survey, “a plurality of the general population believes freedom of religion in the U.S. is worse than it was 10 years ago.”

In contrast, during that same time period, “the proportion of Protestant pastors who fear religious liberties may be further restricted in the future has actually dropped.”

Dropped? Seriously?

At a time when our religious liberties are under attack from every corner – from our children’s schools to our places of business and from the internet to the courts – how can it be that many Protestant pastors are less concerned now than before?

According to Barna, “In the 2014 survey of all Christian and non-Christian clergy, over half of Protestant pastors (55%) admitted they were very concerned that religious freedom will become more restricted in the next five years; this percentage fell to below half (49%) in the 2015 / 2016 study and to one-third (34%) in 2017.”

Indeed, “If signs of concern waned during these years, it’s not because emphasis on religious freedom was any less prominent in national news. In 2015, in particular, there were several high-profile religious liberty stories, including the controversial passage (and amendment) of the Indiana Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which proponents claimed was intended to restrict government’s ability to infringe on religious rights; the landmark ruling in Obergefell vs. Hodges in the Supreme Court, granting marriage rights to same-sex couples; and threats to repeal the accreditation of Gordon College for their statement of faith on marriage as limited to a man and a woman. Considering these events in light of a perceived drop in Protestant pastors’ concerns about religious freedom, there is perhaps less of a ‘headline sensitivity’ than one might expect.”

Could it be that these pastors feel more confidence because of the positive steps the Trump administration has taken to reinforce our religious liberties?

That is certainly possible, and the president has done a lot for the cause of religious liberty, from his war against the Johnson Amendment to his many fine federal court appointees. And he has used his bully pulpit to speak up for our freedoms.

At the same time, it would be foolish for us to think that the national tide had somehow turned and that our religious liberties were not under serious and real attack. And what happens if a radical, leftist Democrat becomes our next president? What will things look like then?

In my 2011 book, A Queer Thing Happened to America, I devoted one whole chapter to the assault on our freedoms, noting, “The really frightening thing is that it would be easy to write an entire book focusing on the subject matter of this chapter alone, and the book could be much longer than this present book – and this is one long book!” (For the record, the book was 700 pages long with 1,500 endnotes. The chapter in question was more than 17,000 words long.)

That was back in 2011, and even then, I could list numerous, full-length books documenting this very real assault on our most fundamental freedoms – namely, our freedoms of speech, conscience, and religion.

For example, in 2003, David Limbaugh wrote, Persecution: How Liberals Are Waging War Against Christianity.

That same year Alan Sears and Craig Osten wrote, The Homosexual Agenda: Exposing the Principal Threat to Religious Freedom Today.

In 2009, Donald Wildom wrote,Speechless: Silencing the Christians.

Also in 2009, Janet Foler wrote, The Criminalization of Christianity: Read This Book Before It Becomes Illegal!

In 2010, Tammy Bruce wrote, The New Thought Police: Inside the Left’s Assault on Free Speech and Free Minds.

This is just a representative sampling, and some of these books are more than 15 years old.

In fact, reading their content only underscores the urgency of the hour we live in today. In many ways, the warnings were quite prescient – and remember: these were written before social media giants like Google and Facebook had fully shown their hands.

Today, you need a very large, detailed scorecard to keep track of the latest assaults on our religious liberties, to the point that some major organizations (such as the ADL or Liberty Counsel or the FRC) sound out daily updates.

That’s why this Barna survey should be of special concern. Our leaders need to wake up and speak up – while they still have the chance.

And to every congregant who would say, “My pastor is not sounding the alarm or giving us constructive steps to take,” I offer you this council.

First, pray for them, don’t gossip about them. They have a lot on their plate and face many unique challenges.

Second, send them a note and say, “Pastor, we love you and are praying for you and we want you to raise your voice. On behalf of our families – especially our children and our grandchildren – please speak up and speak out.”

Then, remind them of the oft-quoted words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world it leaves to its children.”
